Our Approach

More than another explanation from a textbook.

School can be genuinely overwhelming. Marks, exams, expectations at home and decisions about next year all arrive at once. We are close enough to that experience to remember exactly what it felt like — and that changes how we teach.

  • Someone in your corner

Because we are university students ourselves, we can relate to a student in a way that a much older teacher or a large tutoring company often cannot. We want students to feel that somebody is genuinely on their side during a difficult term.

  • Lessons built around the student

Every student learns differently, so we adapt the explanation, the pace, the examples, the practice questions and the revision strategy to suit the person in front of us.

  • Confidence before marks

Improving marks matters, but confidence usually comes first. The goal is for a student to look at a hard question and think, “I can figure this out.”

  • Understanding, not memorising

In subjects such as Mathematics, IT, CAT and EGD, memorising a procedure gets you only as far as the questions you have seen before. We spend the time on why something works.

  • We have just been there

We wrote matric recently and are currently working through demanding degrees. Tests, deadlines, pressure and the feeling of being behind are all familiar territory.

What we teach

Subjects

One-on-one tutoring across the IEB and CAPS curricula, with a small number of first-year university modules available on request. English and Afrikaans are offered for Grades 1–7 only; everything else runs the full way through school.

  • Grades 1–12

    Mathematics

From early number confidence through to Grade 12 algebra, trigonometry and calculus — always working on the reasoning behind a method, not just the steps.

  • Grades 1–12

    Further Studies & AP Mathematics

Focused support for the additional Mathematics paper: the heavier algebra, calculus and proof work that sits beyond the core syllabus.

  • Grades 1–12

    Information Technology

Programming logic, data structures, databases and theory — worked through line by line until a student can debug their own code.

  • Grades 1–12

    Computer Applications Technology

Practical, exam-focused work in Word, Excel, Access and HTML, plus the theory paper — with plenty of time spent on past papers.

  • Grades 1–12

    Engineering Graphics & Design

Drawing conventions, orthographic and isometric projection, interpenetration, loci and civil drawings — taught from an engineering degree.

  • Grades 1–7

    Afrikaans

Taal, begrip, woordeskat en skryfwerk — steady, patient practice for younger students building fluency and confidence.

  • Grades 1–7

    English

Reading comprehension, language structures, spelling and creative writing, at a pace that lets a young reader enjoy the work.

    Selected University Modules

Meet your tutors

You will always know exactly who you are working with.

There is no agency in between. Every lesson is taught by Elise or Alex, so a student builds a real relationship with one person who knows their work, their school and where they tend to get stuck.

Elise — ELIX Tutoring tutor

Elise

Data Science · Second year

Stellenbosch University

Specialities

  • Mathematics
  • Further Studies & AP Mathematics
  • Information Technology

Elise is in her second year of Data Science at Stellenbosch University and has been tutoring for around three years. She is at her best with students who have quietly decided they are simply “not a maths person” — her approach is calm and unhurried, and she will keep reshaping an explanation until she finds the one that works for that particular student.

More about Elise

Her lessons are deliberately relaxed. Questions are welcome, mistakes are useful, and there is never anything embarrassing about saying you do not understand something yet.

Finished in the top ten of her matric class at Curro Hazeldean, where she was a pupil from Grade 1 to Grade 12. Completed her first year at Stellenbosch University with distinction.

Away from the desk

Elise is an equestrian. She rode competitively through high school and now rides mostly to unwind and clear her head between lectures.

Alex Grobler — ELIX Tutoring tutor

Alex

Civil Engineering · Second year

Stellenbosch University

Specialities

  • Mathematics
  • Further Studies & AP Mathematics
  • Engineering Graphics & Design
  • Computer Applications Technology

Alex is in his second year of Civil Engineering and has more than 150 hours of tutoring behind him. He is drawn to the students who have started to dislike a subject, because in his experience that is usually where the biggest change is possible — get someone enjoying the work again and the marks tend to follow.

More about Alex

He teaches the way he studies: practically, on paper, working through the problem alongside the student rather than lecturing at them. He is encouraging and direct, and he is genuinely pleased when a student gets there on their own.

Mathematics

Matriculated from Midstream College, a strongly academic South African school. Now in his second year of Civil Engineering, a degree he chose for exactly the reasons he enjoys tutoring — problem-solving, and working out the practical answer to a difficult question.

Away from the desk

Alex played first-team hockey in Grades 11 and 12 and still plays action and indoor hockey whenever the university timetable allows.

Why choose us

Small enough to actually know your child.

We keep our numbers deliberately low. That is what makes it possible to prepare properly for a lesson, remember what happened in the last one, and notice when a student is struggling with more than just the work.

  • Personalised teaching

Lessons are shaped around one student's gaps, pace and goals — not a fixed programme.

  • Patient and approachable

No student should ever feel embarrassed about asking a question or admitting they are lost.

  • Recent school experience

We know the current IEB and CAPS environment because we were writing these papers recently.

  • Strong academic background

We tutor the subjects we performed strongly in, and we are still studying them at university level.

  • Support beyond the textbook

Encouragement, structure and a bit of accountability during the weeks when everything piles up.

  • Direct access to your tutor

You deal with Elise or Alex directly. There is no agency or call centre in between.

In their words

What our students say.

A few words from students and families we have had the privilege of working with.

  • Parent
I would highly recommend Alex as a tutor. He is professional, patient and dedicated to helping my child understand the work. Since starting with Alex, I’ve seen a big improvement in both my child’s schoolwork and confidence. He explains things clearly and makes learning easier and more enjoyable. I’m very grateful for the progress my child has made.

    Anastashia

    Parent of Kingsley, Grade 1

  • Student
Elise is honestly one of the most patient tutors I’ve had. If I don’t understand something, she finds a different way to explain it until it actually makes sense, and she never makes you feel bad for asking questions. Maths used to stress me out, but she made it feel much less overwhelming. She’s so easy to talk to that after a while it felt more like working with a friend than just a tutor, and I feel a lot more confident with my work now.

    Caitlin

    Grade 11 student

  • Student
I started tutoring with Alex while preparing to rewrite Mathematics after struggling with it the year before. He made sure I stayed on top of my work, which really helped with my procrastination, and he spent extra time on topics I found difficult before moving on. After every lesson he would check that I actually understood the work. Within a month I already felt much more confident, and when I eventually wrote my exam it went far more smoothly than before. Alex also made the lessons enjoyable, which made it much easier to stay focused.

Questions

Before you book.

If something is not answered here, ask us — we would much rather answer a question now than have you guess.

Do you tutor both CAPS and IEB students?
Yes. We work with students following either curriculum and adapt to the assessment style, prescribed work and past papers your school uses.
Do you offer online or in-person lessons?
Both may be possible, but it depends on the subject, your location and tutor availability. Send us an enquiry and we will tell you honestly what we can offer you.
Which tutor will we work with?
We decide that between the two of us once we know the subject, the grade and what the student needs, so you get the better fit rather than whoever is free. We will always tell you who your tutor is before the first lesson is confirmed.
How long is a lesson, and when do lessons happen?
We agree that with you directly once we know the subject, the grade and what is coming up — some students are better served by a shorter, more frequent session and others by a longer one. Send us an enquiry and we will work it out together.
When is my booking confirmed?
Once we have confirmed a time with you and payment has been received. The free introduction is the exception, since there is nothing to pay.
Do you tutor university students?
Selected first-year Stellenbosch University modules may be available on request, including Probability Theory and Statistics 114, Computer Science 114 and Computer Science 144. It depends on the module and on tutor availability, so please enquire before booking.
What if I am not sure which package to choose?
Start with a single lesson, or with the free introduction. Tell us what the student is struggling with and we will say honestly what we think makes sense — there is no advantage to us in selling you more lessons than you need.
Do you guarantee better marks?
No, and we would be careful of anyone who does. What we commit to is helping a student genuinely understand their work, build confidence and work towards their own academic potential.
